This song was written in the fifties in Vestmannaeyjar, a small island vest of Iceland with the population of 4.200, and first performed in the National Festival, Þjóðhátíð in Vestmannaeyjar. It is an annual outdoor festival, first celebrated in 1874, held on the weekend before the first Monday in August. Locals and guests gather on the island for four days of various events, most prominently big stage concerts, bonfires, fireworks displays and the festival's signature Sunday night crowd singing.
